[YouTube] Why Do Asian People Have English Names?

There is a video on YouTube that discuss how western people's see that Taiwanese have english names.

About this topic, a freind on my Plurk gave an interseting perspective on this topic -- using alias instead of real name is actually a tradition in East Asian cultural sphere.

Back to ancient China, besides thier given name(名 / ming), when a male grows up to 20 years old, they will adopt another name called courtesy name (字 / zi) as a symbol of adulthood and respect. In fact, calling someone's given name is rude if he has courtesy name.

And for some historical person, sometimes thier courtesy name is more widely known than thier given name. For example, Liu Ji is normally called Liu Bowen in China and Taiwan, where Bowen is his actually courtesy name. Almost everybody know who is Liu Bowen, but if you called him Liu Ji, lots poeple will not know who you are talking about.

There even something called Art Name (號 / hao), this is a slef-choosen name to use in certian area, for example, drawing or writing. And again, a person's art name may be more famous then thier given name, for example, Su Shi.

So the arguments that "People should be proud of their born name" is a perspective from western culture, but in our cultural sphere, a people with multiple identity (given name / courtesy name / art name and so on...) is quite normal, and it's natural to us.

Although we do not have courtesy name and art name nowaday, but from our edcuation, we are quite familiar with the concept that a person could have multiple name, and calling somebody's given name is may not appropriate in certain circumstance (ex. we normally don't call our parents name in entire life). So having multiple names isn't a problem for us, and we will not think that we use nickname / alias / English name is because we didn't proud about our born name, and calling others born name is not consider a sign of respect neither.

And in this modren society, we deal with English everyday. For example, the username of email need to be Latin alphabet. And in Taiwan, use also not used to transliteration to latin alphabet, casuse we still use Bopomofo as phonetic notation which use special symbols instead of Latin alphabet.

For all these reason, it become really nature for us to pick an English name as our alias, and introduce ourself to foreigner that we called this name, because having mutliple identity is so common in our culture that we normally won't even notice it.
